Howling's Phases Is Probably The Record of The Year
It was no surprise when RY X & Frank Wiedemann swept independent music with their debut album Sacred Grounds. The LA-based Aussie artist and Berlin producer are an underground match with a progressive fate. Even though we're living in a post-Bob Moses age, the delicate display of live electronica is still a treat to savor. Howling is that treat with a familiar taste that's universally savored, like fine wine.
The project was a result of hasty but driven studio sessions while crossing paths as traveling musicians. Frank's active role as one-half of Âme keeps him busy with that Innervision biz of leading the techno world. You might not know this but Frank typically shares the decks and studio with 4-time Resident Advisor DJ of the year Dixon. It's clear that Frank doesn't have to worry about the bouncers of Berghain. This family of German musicians has not only fueled the Berlin renaissance but revived electronic music's erudite roots. Howling's album spread like wildfire hosted by none other than Ninja Tune's Counter Records. Boasting a blend of live electronic built on a foundation of techno, the entrancing tone of Howling in just what night needs.
'Phases' marks the duo's return to Counter Records and the first track off of Howling's next album. Rising like a cosmic sun, the verse introduces a heavenly melody. Just before peaking, the slate is wiped clean for a restrained bass and powerful low-end percussion. Its subtly-crafted delivery disguises the fact that indeed this is a drop in all of it's Deutsche glory. As admitted in the lyric, RY's hedonistic even heathen verses are a call to somewhere better, get there. If this tune doesn't put you in a trance, you should adjust your modus operandi.
Luckily, Phases is just the beginning of this project's next wave in their trailblazing journey as musicians. Channeling the elegance of a Howling wolf, these two continue to own the night with a stage-ready act bred from the decks. Don't sleep on Howling, they're a required course for dance enlightenment.
