Houndstooth’s latest by Special Request is acid-based if you look at total time, but a hiding heater is the true gem in this 4-track EP. The Fabric sub-label is bound to attract more than just the main stage, but the title track single sets the pace for a dystopian dance floor. While RA focused on Nina’s stream of consciousness contribute to the release, her mixes are simply hors d’oeuvres to the main course. Let’s face is Paul Woodford has been behind the Ibiza decks for over a decade and delivered hits before the money was here. ‘Looking Glass’ is proof that he’s still fighting fit.
Drawing from last years originals, the front side includes two renditions of 2017 title track Curtain Twister. Both showcase Nina’s erratic side. Producing tracks that aren’t made for the main stage, her ‘Alice Was Here’ remix is a consistent sermon of mysterious acid tones and spoken vocals. Add waves of fading static and this is just the tune for her Icelandic cave sets. Kraviz’s ‘Samba’ remix adds a punchier take to the static waves for a solid instrumental filler track.
The EP’s back side kicks off with the only original of the lot. It’s a breaks track alright and heavy at that. ‘Looking Glass’ is a stout single from Special Request himself. Big kicks lure you down the rabbit hole with mysterious bleeps, only to reveal a whirlwind of stormy breaks and junglist percussion. Anastasia Kristensen wraps up the release with yet another 2017 title track ‘Tiresias’. Hitting opposite ends of the spectrum for the diverse DJ, add this one to your crate knowing when and where each part fits.
Bonus: the vinyl comes with a blotter art insert. Hinting that this record is perfect for your next trip, wax is always great with a psychedelic keepsake.
