Radio Slave adds yet another not notch techno delivery with French act Hemka. A common fixture behind the influential decks around the region, her sound is a driving mix of ‘fast-paced, industrial and a bit psychedelic’ techno. Fitting right in on Matt Edwards’ Rekids Special Projects imprint, this heavy 12″ is a late night essential for floors that can handle it.
Special Projects is a vinyl-only with a ‘more techno-oriented sound’ than the main label. Clocking in as the twelfth release, Hemka joins the likes of P.Leone, Marco Faraone, and DJ Spider for the limited pressed series. In short, she had big shoes to full; but this rising name delivered big.
Named after Natalie Portman’s emotionally-charged character in 2010 thriller Black Swan, Hemka paints a powerful picture of drama-laden kicks. Throughout the EP, her technical prowess in the studio is matched by sounds to make the club move.
‘Doppelgänger’ features a damaging kick under disjointed piano melodies to establish an eerie aesthetic, before ‘Countdown’ offers emotive pads and twisted bleeps that evolve amidst shuffling drums. Finally, ‘The Portrait Of Nina Sayers’ escalates in tension with an arpeggiated melody, pumping kicks and firm snares.
Proving that the label is a powerful force at the top of global techno, it’s clear that Rekids (and Special Projects) will be a hot commodity behind the decks of events with underground influence. Hit follow on Hemka and keep watch for more from her and the label.
