Thomass Jackson & Iñigo Vontier pressed the first Calypso record as a 12″ VA two years ago. Hailing from Argentina and Mexico respectively, the two heard the sounds of analogue dance echoing throughout the region. The label was launched a simple focus, to share eclectic music from Latin America. It’s no secret that Mexico City and Buenos Aires are already on the underground music map. Now two years in, not much has changed as the label prepares to expand past the continent of South America.
An array of stellar releases make up the boutique outlet. From sequential EP by label bosses to an edit imprint dubbed Correcciones Calypso, the duo have gained the affection of tastemaker crates across the globe. Typically jam-packed with eccentric rhythm drums and entrancing electronic tones, Calypso is an immensity refined world music for the dance floor.
006 channels a familiar tribal electronique from another city that flies moderately below the radar in terms of tour stops. Titled ‘Tel Aviv Flavors’, a four-sided 12″ presents three exciting artists from the Israeli capital. Psychadelic achieved, the record seemingly channels Latin spices from start to finish. To be fair, Breakfast Club resident and DIsco Halal-signee Naduve recorded B1 during a stint in Mexico.
With releases like this, it’s safe to say Calypso will continue to ear the ear of those who influence behind the decks. With A&R clearly on the hunt for something new, this label is doing dance naturally.
