Yeah yeah we’re late to find this gem but better late than never. Found on an Amtrak north of Philly after a handful of overpriced train beers, this atmospheric masterpiece is a pre-summer teleport to ADE. Well known for his Doka moniker, Yugen is a new alias of Nijmegen-based Han Frissen on this 4 track EP. Previously releasing on Konstrukt and Rekids, Response is pressed via Shipwrec.
Channeling the hypnotism of 90’s anthem, the A1 on the record (also titled “Response”) floats past peak hour with a mirage of angelic vocals and droning basslines. Next up is “Notch”, an exotic dubby track worthy of substance-filled Adriatic sunsets. Or sobriety, but probably not. I wish we could identify the cymbals on this track as they are especially rad!
The last two tracks follow the same up/down mood as the previous two, starting with the airy rhythms of “16916”. Broken up drum-pads click throughout with a backbone and synths reminiscent of earlier Trance records. This seems to be a pattern noticeable among the Dutch Techno scene, which is a breath of fresh air if you’ve been smothered by the Burning Man sound and other trends around the world. “Inward” plays out just as the name would suggest, feels of 7am thoughts on a smile filled dancefloor. Heel lekker 10/10.

Han Frissen is well known amongst the techno faithful. Under his Doka moniker he has carved stark sculptures and molded absorbing soundscapes. His Konstrukt label has been a proven fertile ground, not only for Frissen but also for a spread of upcoming and established talent. Arriving on Deep Sound Channel the Dutchman is ready to premiere a new alias, Yugen. Forged in the warm rhythmic patterns of his previous creations, the Nijmegen musician folds new textures and tones into his compositions. From the intimidating industrial vision of ”Response,” Yugen amplifies abandonment in the reduced rendition that is “Notch.” The flip brightens with the gentle movements and subtle ebbs of “16916” before the organic flows and angular builds of “Inward.”
