One of the largest spatial sound systems in the world, the Symphonic Sound System harnesses the pristine acoustics of Saal 1, the legendary orchestral recording hall within Funkhaus Berlin. The floating array of 100 omnidirectional speakers, custom designed and powered by 4DSOUND, envelops both artist and audience in rich spatial detail, inviting exploration of new symphonic territories within the walls of the storied venue.
During the Red Bull Music Festival Berlin, various composers and producers present ambitious works using 4DSOUND’s spatial synthesis and flexible control platform. Iconoclast Oneohtrix Point Never will present a sitespecific version of his fourpart dystopian digital concertscape MYRIAD, which was first premiered at Red Bull Music Festival NYC. Together with a full live touring ensemble, special guests and visual collaborators, OPN will use the unique sonic environment in Saal 1 to explore disorienting forms at the intersection of theater, installation art and musical performance. Acclaimed Indianabased Planet Mu artist Jlin, who layers the rhythmic drums of Chicago footwork with shadowy textures and timeshifting effects, will also perform, recontextualising her signature sound design into an inhabitable sonic world.
“Maybe it can change the way we produce and consume sound completely” - Felix K.
Over the past few months, MONOM have been producing a piece to be presented on the Symphonic Sound System. The installation, entitled IMMANENCE, will take symphonic form and explore the theory that the divine manifests itself in the material world by physically and musically expressing the extreme dynamics of natural phenomena. The piece will contain music and sound design contributions from a selection of artists that have partaken in MONOMs residency program over the last 12 months, as well as some new friends. This specially produced piece will be presented as a prelude to each live show in 4DSOUND.
