The presser from трип's latest introduces the label as 'seminal' which got me thinking. Just yesterday it was 2014, Nina was making waves behind the decks and challenging the dance world in an unapologetic way. Nina was raw while on the road, she was making a name and the world had noticed. The timing was right when Trip was announced, Nina was armed with a steady stream of demos from hidden talents like Bjarki, PTU, and Biogen. Acid-fueled трип nights were immediately an uncompromising dive in raw raves, the west immediately understood that Russia's sub-culture was in a league of its own.
Number 20's arrival has a tracklisting that's the type of shock that brings a huge silent smile to the reader. While originally hearing about it on RA, we were the ones in the coffee shop with dumb grins staring blissfully at this essential double EP. Following the same crate-killing concept of other TRP releases, the concept album 'Don't Mess With Cupid' is a journey to say the least. Led by Kraviz, she adds regulars Bjarki, PTU, Exos and the never-ending catalog of Biogen releases to ensure a family affair. The real surprise comes in the form of "15 c7" by Universal Indicator, a '90s project from Aphex Twin and Mike Dred. In the usual show of support to her roots, Nikita Zabelin, Roma Zuckerman, and Shadowax represent the next wave of Russian rave talent.
All of the tracks are selected around a particular story, a trip, and presented as a continuous sonic landscape. Kraviz works without release dates or deadlines, enabling her to achieve a certain sound bank to shape the story, unmasking the thoughts and unravelling like a dream.
We've seen the label evolve but this track is a generation in six minutes. Russian producer Shadowax lays down a build that tells a story like no other. This trip through genres twists a techno foundation into a mass of breaks, jungle and hardcore. The journey through tempo and drums is a master class in rave roots. Drawing influences from her live project ishome, Shadowax paints a vivid picture of the 90s in audio form.
As typical as is sounds, Nina, and the трип crew are channeling the past while influencing the next generation of rave. From cave parties to backyard mixes, Nina is a focused label boss influencing creativity with poise. In a short 4 years, Trip has built a legacy of late night hits pressed in wax. Putting out unique records packed with abstract sounds is a feat on it's own, Trip does it while building a future with the next generation. Though young, it's without a doubt that трип is a seminal label.
